What this site collects

This site has no accounts, no comment section, and no forms. We don't ask for your name, email address, or payment details.

Hosting

The site is hosted on Cloudflare Pages. Like any web host, Cloudflare processes technical information needed to deliver pages and protect the service, such as your IP address, browser type, and the pages requested. See Cloudflare's privacy policy for how it handles that data.

Analytics

We use Google Analytics 4 and Microsoft Clarity to understand how the site is used. Analytics is not active for every visitor (see "Where analytics is not used" below). When it is active, the following applies.

Google Analytics 4

Google Analytics 4 is a service from Google that shows us which pages are read and how visitors arrive. A Google script runs in your browser on each page. Google Analytics uses cookies and collects information such as the pages you view, how you reached the site, your approximate location, your device and browser type, and interactions such as scrolling and clicks on links that leave the site. Google processes the data under its own terms. See how Google uses information from sites that use its services.

Microsoft Clarity

Microsoft Clarity is a service from Microsoft that shows us how visitors use and interact with the site through behavioral metrics, heatmaps, and session replay. A Microsoft script runs in your browser on each page and records how the page was displayed and what you did on it: where you moved the pointer, what you clicked or tapped, and how far you scrolled, along with information such as your device, browser, and approximate location. A session replay lets us play this back as a reconstruction of your visit.

Clarity uses first-party and third-party cookies. Microsoft's documentation says the first-party cookies hold a pseudonymous ID that connects your page views, and that some of its third-party cookies are also used by Microsoft for advertising and other purposes. Microsoft says Clarity masks what is typed into input fields. This site has no forms or input fields. We use Clarity to improve the site. Microsoft collects and uses the data under its own terms. For details, see the Microsoft Privacy Statement.

We look at analytics information to understand how the site is used. We don't use it to work out who individual visitors are.

Where analytics is not used

This site is written for readers in the United States. We do not load Google Analytics 4 and Microsoft Clarity for visitors who appear to be in the European Economic Area (the European Union member states, Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway), the United Kingdom, or Switzerland. For those visitors, the analytics scripts are not loaded and no analytics cookies are set.

To decide this, each page asks Cloudflare, our hosting provider, which country your connection appears to come from. Cloudflare works that out from your IP address. We use the answer only for this check and don't store it. If the country can't be determined, analytics is not loaded. Because the check is based on IP address, it can be wrong, for example when you use a VPN.

Your choices

The analytics scripts are not loaded at all in these cases:

  • Your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal. Some browsers and privacy extensions send it automatically or have a setting for it.
  • You turn analytics off for this browser with the button below.

This control needs JavaScript. Without it, you can still block analytics with the options listed below.

The button applies to every analytics tool on this site. When you press it, your choice is saved in this browser and the page reloads. After that, the analytics scripts are not loaded on any page of this site in this browser. The choice doesn't carry over to other browsers or devices, and clearing this site's data resets it.

Turning analytics off stops new collection. It doesn't erase information that was already collected, and cookies set earlier may stay in your browser until they expire. You can delete them in your browser's settings.

You can also block cookies or scripts from these services in your browser. The site works the same either way. Google offers a Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.
